The Earth's ozone layer is expected to recover within 40 years and will be protected by the phasing out of nearly 99% of ozone-depleting substances, a UN-backed panel of experts said in a report Monday.
In a report published every four years on the progress of the Montreal Protocol, if current policies remain in place, the ozone layer is expected to recover to 1980 values by 2040.
